What Are Steam Coils?

Steam coils are coils that use steam to heat air. The steam enters as a gas and condenses to a liquid inside the tubes, giving off heat to the air. This is a very common way of heating air because there is often a central utility system producing steam that is distributed around the manufacturing or processing facility.

What are the Types of Steam Coils?

Advanced Coil manufactures standard steam coils and distributing steam coils for a variety of industries and applications. As a Steam Coils Manufacturer, we specialize in providing the expertise, knowledge and design required to provide a 5-year warranty for the following steam coils.

Standard Steam Model S Coils

An ‘S’ is a standard steam coil with connections at opposite ends. This is the best and most common configuration.

Standard Steam Model SU Coils

An ‘SU’ is a standard steam coil with connections on the same end and may be used if it were placed up against something, such as a wall.

Distributing Steam Model DS Coils

The ‘DS’ is a distributing steam coil that has same end connectors. This style of coil should be used when the entering air temperature is below 40°F.

Distributing Steam Model DO Coils

The ‘DO’ is a distributing steam coil with opposite end connections. This style of coil should be used when the entering air temperature is below 40°F.

Common Materials Used For Steam Coils

  • Low pressure/Light duty (<50 psi): copper tubes with aluminum fins
  • Heavy duty: stainless tubes with aluminum fins (aluminum fins provide 3x’s the heat transfer as stainless steel fins).

Steam Coil Design Factors

Selecting the right steam coil for your application involves many considerations, including the design of your steam coil. By understanding the critical factors that determine proper coil selection, you can be confident that you have chosen a high-performing, long-lasting piece of equipment. Experts at Advanced Coil can help guide you through the following primary and secondary design factors that you should consider when choosing a steam coil:

  • Temperatures of the airstream
  • Presence of corrosives in the airstream or steam
  • Level of filtration of the airstream
  • Aspect ratio (ratio of finned length to finned height)
  • Orientation
  • Case design
